On Thursday, 17th November 2016, the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace will be hosting its first Labour Market Strategy Day from 8 to 4 at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Our recent work on Labour Market Information shows not only are there imbalances between the supply and demand for skilled labour, but that the skills required are changing too. We believe that if our national industry is to remain relevant and competitive in the future, now is the time to take a hard look at how we recruit, train and develop the workforce that can make it happen.

At the same time, as a backdrop, we have a Government that is repurposing itself and actively seeking to change the way it interacts with industry at home and how it projects itself on the International stage. How do we as an industry benefit from this and what should we expect going forward?

Finally, how aligned are our colleges and universities with the changing needs of industry? More and more industry tells us that qualified workers are less and less ready to be effective in the workplace from day one, whilst educators struggle to deal with an industry that is “all over the map” on what constitutes ready-to-work training.

Today, there is more than ever, a compelling case to be made for developing a National Human Resource Strategy for Aviation and Aerospace.

We will be inviting some100 participants from across government, education and industry to come together, present their viewpoint on current conditions, their plans for progress, and their aspirations for the workforce of the future. This to culminate in the formation of the first national Canadian Aviation & Aerospace Labour Market Advisory Committee and Working Group to represent the national community in matters related to its labour market and human resource development policies and priorities.

Our proposed agenda, though still dependant on the availability of our speakers, is to open with the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace, and the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada presenting the latest statistics and labour market profile for the Canadian Aviation & Aerospace industry, including workforce composition, and the most urgent personnel and training needs. From there we will focus on the three key stakeholder groups, Government, Industry and Educators:

ISED and ESDC will discuss the federal policies and priorities that most effect the industry’s Labour Market, as well as how our industry can leverage the new government’s Innovation Agenda.
Amongst Industry representatives; Air Canada will present an initiative to develop multi-disciplinary technicians; Standard Aero will present work -integrated-learning in practice; MTU will present the market and technology driven reasoning behind their upskilling plans for component repair technicians.
BCIT, Carleton University and others will share how the educational world can, and is, responding to the changing needs of industry.

The event will be free of charge, and includes breakfast coffee, lunch, plus an optional guided tour of the Museum’s star exhibit, “The Deadly Skies”, a tribute to WWI flyers.
