CAREER EVENT: AEROPORTAIL – VITRINES 2018

Hundreds of jobs available – 1,000 young people respond to the call

Montréal, April 20, 2018 – Aéro Montréal, Québec’s aerospace cluster, is today holding the 3rd edition of its career event: Aéroportail - Vitrines 2018, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. This event is being organized in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity and Aéroports de Montréal, as part of International Aerospace Week in Montréal.

“The dynamism of the aerospace industry is contributing to Québec’s good economic performance,” said François Blais, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity. “Companies in this sector are dealing with skilled labour needs that are slowing their growth. The 2018-2019 Budget set aside more than $800 million in investments over the next five years related to the national workforce strategy that we will be unveiling shortly. This strategy will propose concrete measures to support these companies, as well as those throughout our economy who want to attract and retain workers.”

“In a context of labour scarcity, competition is not only between companies in the same sector but also between industrial sectors,” said Suzanne M. Benoît, President of Aéro Montréal. “There is a feverish race to attract talent and our role is to promote the benefits of an aerospace career in Montréal. The presence of more than 1,000 young people today is the best proof of the tremendous interest the next generation has in aerospace careers.”

The event enabled more than 200 jobs to be offered to the young people present. Twenty-five kiosks manned by companies and schools were set up to showcase various technologies. There are numerous employment opportunities in Québec’s aerospace industry and many companies have significant workforce needs. Within 10 years, 31,681 positions will need to be filled (8,816 jobs to be created and 22,865 positions to be replaced)[1].

“The arrival of artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on future jobs. Several studies show that 85% of jobs in 2030 do not exist yet. A very large proportion of workers will have to acquire new skills very quickly,” said Mrs. Benoît.

Québec has seven universities that offer engineering programs. In addition, it has two internationally recognized and specialized schools: the École nationale d’aérotechnique (ÉNA) and the École des métiers de l’aérospatiale de Montréal (ÉMAM). Greater Montréal has all the resources to develop a pool of talent that is unique in the world to train the next generation and workforce in aerospace.

To meet workforce challenges, Aéro Montréal has developed the AeroPortal, a unique portal for displaying careers and trades in the aerospace industry. This tool centralizes training courses and job postings related to the aerospace sector. More than 50 companies are currently offering job opportunities.

This career day also featured a case study competition involving eight teams representing about 10 universities and specialized schools. The theme this year was: “The passenger experience of tomorrow - aircraft interiors of the future as seen by Québec’s next generation.” Very high-quality project proposals were submitted aimed at redefining the flying experience and interiors of aircraft of the future.
